The line debuted on July 1, 2007, at Hasbro's Future Products panel at BotCon. While the designs originated with Hasbro and the Cartoon Network team, TakaraTomy stepped up to the plate to engineer the toys. Rather, transforming is the gimmick, and the toys have other special features unique and appropriate to the character (such as triple-changing or interchangeable tools). Unlike the franchises immediately before it, there is no overarching, line-wide gimmick (such as Mini-Cons or Cyber Planet Keys). The Transformers Animated toy line merges the more expressive design style of the cartoon with extremely poseable robot forms (to a degree which seemed pleasantly surprising even to Hasbro). Ironhide's role as co-leader of the Autobots in this series is sort of an extention to his role in the original G1 cartoon, where he would often take command of the unit stationed on Earth when Optimus was indisposed.Franchise navigation: Transformers Animated Ironhide's appearance is based off of his original Diaclone toy's black & red colors rather than his more famous red & grey color scheme, and his Colossus-style retractable/indestructible armor is based off of his Animated counterpart. History The Civil War The Invasion Revolution Season 3 Abilities & Equipment He'll provide unwavering support to up-and-comers he's decided have "the right stuff", although he may take his time in arriving at that determination. He cares immensely for his brothers in arms, always willing to lend a hand when needed and will go to great lengths to ensure their safety, as well as any other planets that the Destrons threaten to destroy. However, this is usually to hide the huge, caring spark in his chest. He can easily tear a Destron Drone apart with his bare hands and can blast through a small squad on his own, thanks to his use of a large variety of weapons, and he'll keep fighting as many Destrons as he has to to the bitter end and bring down as many of them as he can in the process. Gruff and ornery, he prefers actions to words, and dislikes talk for talk's sake. He's been through three long, hard-fought wars, and he isn't afraid to show why he's lasted for this long.

On the outside, Ironhide's as tough as they come - he's yesterday's model, but he's built to last.
